Lalalandes in winter:
sauna, cold bath and frozen nature

Lalalandes pool under winter snow, cold water bathing

Imagine a retreat in the heart of nature, where the comfort of a handcrafted timber house meets the authenticity of raw materials, nestled in the enchanting landscapes of Aveyron. When the blazing colours of autumn fade and nature dresses in winter tones, Lalalandes becomes something else โ€” an intimate cocoon, far from everything, where fire crackles and silence is total.

A timber refuge facing the cold

The house was built entirely by hand, in solid timber, with materials designed to withstand Aveyron's winters and retain warmth. The wood-burning stove in the living room becomes in winter the beating heart of the cottage. You warm yourself there after a walk in the frozen gorges, drink your morning coffee watching the mist rise from the Dourdou valley.

The three suites maintain a gentle, natural warmth. No aggressive electric heating โ€” just wood, wool, and silence.

The sauna + cold plunge ritual in the heart of winter

It's in winter that this ritual truly comes into its own. The traditional wood-fired sauna, built in Douglas fir, reaches an intense heat in under an hour. You stay 10 to 15 minutes, you sweat, you breathe the steam of warm timber โ€” then you step out into the brisk Aveyron air and plunge into the pool.

The cool pool water in the middle of December: a sensation difficult to describe. A shock at first, then a wave of energy rising from the soles of your feet to your head. The body wakes up entirely. This thermal contrast โ€” an ancestral practice in Nordic cultures โ€” boosts the immune system, improves circulation and leaves an incomparable energy that lasts for hours.

You string together several cycles. Between them, you wrap yourself in a bathrobe and sit on the wooden terrace, facing the valley. The quiet is absolute.

Exploring Aveyron in winter

Winter is Aveyron's secret season. The tourists have gone, the villages have found their slow rhythm, the oak forests are bare and majestic. It's the best season for:

  • Conques in the mist โ€” the medieval village 5 minutes from the cottage takes on an almost mystical atmosphere in winter. Empty lanes, the abbey illuminated in the morning, stone roofs covered in frost.
  • The Dourdou gorges โ€” the trails are deserted. You hear the sound of the river, the birds, nothing else.
  • Producers' markets โ€” Aubrac cheeses, artisan charcuterie, steaming aligot. Aveyron food is best in winter.
  • La Vinzelle, Estaing, Espalion โ€” villages within 30 km, to visit without the summer crowds.

Why choose winter at Lalalandes?

Because it's the season when everything slows down. No pressure to make the most of every sunny day. You take time to read, to cook, to spend hours in the sauna, to watch the rain fall on the valley. It's another way of travelling โ€” more inward, slower, more real.

Low-season rates (October to March, outside school holidays) are the most accessible of the year. And the cottage is often available for short breaks.
