Mountain biking in the Dourdou valley: wild trails near Conques

The Dourdou valley isn't just for hikers. Its forest tracks and country lanes also draw mountain bikers looking for elevation gain and raw nature. Between Conques and Grand-Vabre, the terrain is demanding. The grey schist gorges create steep climbs, tight bends and technical descents. The slopes, covered in chestnut and oak trees, offer welcome shade in summer. From our eco-lodge, just 7 minutes by car from Conques-en-Rouergue, several routes connect without needing to drive first. A ride here means stepping straight into an untouched landscape, far from crowds and overly groomed trails.

Technical trails between schist and forest

The paths running alongside the Dourdou leave no room for improvisation. Grey schist, exposed in places, makes some sections slippery after rain. The slopes are steep, typical of these narrow gorges. Experienced riders enjoy fast descents under the chestnut canopy, while the climbs give the legs a real workout. There's no excessive tourist signage here, just forest tracks still used for timber work. It's authentic mountain biking, no frills, where nature sets the pace and the rules.

A playground shaped by the Dourdou gorges

Between Conques and Grand-Vabre, the river has carved its bed through schist over thousands of years. The result: steep slopes, contrasting relief, no limestone cliffs like those found elsewhere in Aveyron. Chestnut and oak forests cover these hillsides, creating a dense landscape that shifts with the seasons. For mountain bikers, it's naturally rugged terrain, with no artificial features. Every ride reveals a different view of the valley, alternating between forest shade and sudden clearings above the Dourdou.

Recovering after the ride: nordic bath and sauna

After a demanding ride on these slopes, the body needs to recover. At the eco-lodge, the wood-fired nordic bath soothes muscles worked hard by the climbs. The wood-fired sauna completes this natural recovery. The pool, set in a preserved forest setting, offers a gentler swim at the end of the day. This simple, unpretentious ritual fits the spirit of the place: experience the valley's raw nature, then recharge in a setting designed for wellbeing, just minutes from the trails.
