When the lowlands swelter in August, Aveyron stays one step ahead: its deep valleys, green rivers and oak forests keep a natural coolness few regions in the South can match. From eco-lodge Lalalandes, 5 minutes from Conques, water is everywhere — in the gorges, on the Lot, at the foot of the waterfalls and in the swimming lane facing the valley. Here is how to spend a cool summer in Aveyron.
The Dourdou gorges: swimming a 5-minute walk away
The finest spot is also the closest. From Lalalandes, a path drops down in a few minutes to the Dourdou, the river that carved the valley. There you'll find natural pools where the water stays fresh even in the heat, shaded by cliffs and trees. This is wild swimming at its best, crowd-free, right beside the lodge.
Canoeing and swimming in the Lot valley
About twenty minutes to the north, the Lot unrolls its calm waters between the cliffs. Several rental bases offer canoe and kayak trips, by the half-day or full day, suitable for beginners and families alike. You alternate paddling, swimming and picnics on the pebble beaches. The wilder Truyère offers the same pleasures in a setting of deep gorges.
Waterfalls to cool off
Aveyron has some of the finest waterfalls in the Massif Central. The Salles-la-Source waterfall, about fifteen kilometres from Conques, drops more than 100 metres in the heart of the village. More secret falls hide at the end of the Dourdou valley trails: the reward of an early hike is icy, clear water.
Lakes and wide open waters
If you prefer open water, the Aubrac lakes and the Sarrans reservoir, on the Truyère, offer supervised summer swimming, trout fishing and lakeside walks at more than 1,000 metres of altitude. A complete change of scene, with a Scandinavian feel, just a short drive away.
At Lalalandes: swimming lane, terrace and forest coolness
At the lodge, summer is lived outdoors. The 12-metre swimming lane, open from April to October, extends the 75 m² terrace overlooking the valley. The wooden house, fully insulated with ecological materials, stays cool without air conditioning, and evenings are quiet, with no neighbours in sight, lulled by the song of the crickets.
Fancy a cool summer in Aveyron? The swimming lane, the terrace and the river are waiting for you. Book directly, best price, no middleman.
See availabilitySummer markets and evenings
Aveyron summers are also about village life: farmers' markets in the morning, night markets and village fêtes at dusk, concerts in the abbey of Conques and lively terraces. The perfect way to round off days on the water with gentle, flavoursome evenings.
