North Aveyron: grand landscapes,
exceptional villages and the Lot valley

North Aveyron landscape, Lot valley and medieval villages

North Aveyron is one of the most emblematic territories of the Massif Central. It combines the deep valleys of the Lot and Truyère, the volcanic plateaux of the Aubrac, medieval villages among the best-preserved in France, and natural sites of exceptional rarity. Eco-lodge Lalalandes, at Conques, sits at the heart of this territory — an ideal position for exploring all its facets.

Conques: the medieval jewel of North Aveyron

Listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, Conques is the gateway to North Aveyron. Its abbey church of Sainte-Foy (11th–12th century), its treasury of medieval goldsmithery and its flagstone alleyways form an architectural ensemble unique in France. A 5-minute walk from Lalalandes, it is often the first discovery — and it rarely disappoints.

The Lot valley: between green waters and vineyards

The Lot crosses North Aveyron from east to west, carving a deep valley between limestone cliffs covered in oaks. The river, a deep green, is navigable by canoe-kayak from several launch points. Its banks shelter some of the most beautiful villages in the region:

  • Estaing (20 km from Lalalandes) — listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France. Its medieval castle dominates the river. The 15th-century Gothic bridge is one of the most photographed in Aveyron. AOC Estaing vineyard to discover with local producers.
  • Entraygues-sur-Truyère (25 km) — at the confluence of the Lot and Truyère, this medieval town has a remarkably well-preserved old quarter. AOC Entraygues-Le-Fel wines to taste on the spot.
  • Espalion (30 km) — Friday morning market, corbelled houses on the banks of the Lot, Joseph-Vaylet museum. Starting point for heading up towards the Aubrac.

The Aubrac: the infinity of volcanic plateaux

To the north of the Lot valley, the Aubrac opens up suddenly — a volcanic plateau above 1,000 m altitude, covered in intensely green meadows, dotted with glacial lakes and burons (old summer shepherd huts). The contrast with the enclosed valleys is striking.

  • Laguiole — known for its artisan knives and cheese (Laguiole AOP), this village is the capital of the Aubrac. The cheese cooperative offers tours and tastings.
  • The transhumance — each spring (early June), thousands of Aubrac cattle move up onto the plateaux during a spectacular popular festival.
  • The Aubrac lakes — ideal for trout fishing, hiking and high-altitude swimming.

Lac de Sarrans and the Truyère: Nordic landscapes in Aveyron

The Sarrans reservoir, on the Truyère, is one of the largest artificial lakes in the Massif Central. Its blue-green waters enclosed in wooded gorges create a landscape more reminiscent of Scandinavia than southern France. Canoeing, kayaking, fishing and waterside hiking are practised in relative solitude.

Waterfalls and remarkable natural sites

  • Cascade de Salles-la-Source (15 km) — one of the highest waterfalls in the Massif Central, falling 120 m into the valley. Easily accessible from Conques.
  • Dourdou gorges — from Lalalandes, a 5-minute walk. Swimming in summer, hiking year-round.
  • Truyère gorges — wild landscapes between cliffs and forests, accessible from Entraygues.

Iconic hikes of North Aveyron

  • GR 65 (St James's Way) — passes through Conques. A few kilometres on this ancient trail are enough to feel its intensity.
  • La Vinzelle circuit — 8 km loop from Conques with panoramic views over the valley
  • Tour de l'Aubrac — long-distance multi-day hike on the plateaux
  • Dourdou gorges trail — from Lalalandes, follows the river between cliffs and oak groves

Eco-lodge Lalalandes is ideally placed to explore North Aveyron. Pierre knows every valley, every trail and every local producer — he'll be happy to point you in the right direction on arrival.
