The most beautiful
waterfalls in Aveyron

Waterfall in the Dourdou gorges near Conques, Aveyron

Aveyron is a département of water. Deeply carved rivers, steep gorges, springs that burst between rocks — here, water has sculpted the landscape for millennia. And in this tableau, the waterfalls are the highlights: hidden at the bottom of a valley, around a bend in a trail, at the end of an hour's walk that's worth ten.

Here are the five waterfalls I recommend to my guests, all reachable in under an hour from eco-lodge Lalalandes at Conques.

1. The Dourdou gorges — 5 minutes on foot

No need to go far. The Dourdou river, flowing below the property, forms natural waterfalls and clear pools in its gorges, perfect for swimming. Following the trail that leads downstream from the property, you discover in under 20 minutes wild spots where water cascades over schist rocks.

  • Distance from the cottage: 5 minutes on foot
  • Difficulty: easy (well-marked trail)
  • Swimming: yes, several pools in summer
  • Best season: spring and early summer (high flow)

2. Cascade de la Baume — the showstopper

About 25 km from Conques, in the commune of Bozouls, the cascade de la Baume is one of the most spectacular in the region. It plunges from a height of several dozen metres into a natural canyon, forming a turquoise pool surrounded by lush vegetation. The access path is short (20 minutes one way) but requires good footwear.

  • Distance from the cottage: 30 minutes by car
  • Difficulty: moderate (slippery in places)
  • Swimming: possible at the base of the waterfall
  • Tip: go early morning to avoid crowds in summer

3. Saut du Moulin — wild and secret

Less known than its neighbours, the Saut du Moulin rewards the effort. You need to follow a poorly waymarked forest trail from the hamlet of Saint-Cyprien-sur-Dourdou to reach this fifteen-metre waterfall buried in the oak forest. The reward: near-total solitude and a rare ecosystem — giant ferns, thick mosses, dragonflies.

  • Distance from the cottage: 15 minutes by car + 40 min on foot
  • Difficulty: moderate (GPS navigation recommended)
  • Atmosphere: very wild, rarely visited
  • Tip: ideal in autumn for the colours

4. Bès river waterfalls — in the Truyère gorges

Heading towards the Aubrac plateau, the Bès river carves spectacular gorges between Laguiole and Entraygues. Several waterfalls punctuate the hiking trail that follows the river. The setting is striking: black basalt, fir forests, high-altitude meadows. A completely different atmosphere from the Dourdou gorges — higher, colder, more austere.

  • Distance from the cottage: 50 minutes by car
  • Difficulty: moderate to difficult depending on the route
  • Walk duration: 2 to 4 hours depending on the circuit
  • Best season: May–June (snowmelt)

5. Cascade de Salles-la-Source — the iconic one

40 km from Conques, the cascade de Salles-la-Source is the most famous and highest in Aveyron (around thirty metres). It springs directly from a limestone cliff in the middle of the village — a surprising spectacle that draws many visitors. Ideal to combine with a visit to the village's trades museum, housed in a former coal mine.

  • Distance from the cottage: 40 minutes by car
  • Difficulty: very easy (accessible from the village)
  • Flow: variable by season (impressive in spring)
  • To combine with: Musée des Arts et Métiers de Salles-la-Source

All these sites are easily accessible from Lalalandes. Pierre can point you to the best access routes, car parks and ideal times for each site. Just ask on arrival.

Practical information

  • Footwear: always prefer closed shoes with non-slip soles — waterfall surroundings are often wet and slippery
  • Flow: spring (April–June) is the best period for waterfalls at their finest
  • Swimming: Aveyron river water is cold even in summer (15–18°C) — a short wetsuit can be useful
  • Access: some paths are not waymarked — download GPS tracks before setting off (Komoot or IGN Rando app)
