The villages of the Lot valley
Following the Lot valley eastwards, three listed villages line up, easy to combine in a single day:
- Estaing — its medieval château overlooks the river, and its 15th-century Gothic bridge is among the most photographed in Aveyron. A local AOC vineyard to discover with the growers.
- Saint-Côme-d'Olt — remarkable for its striking twisted (spiral) bell tower and its perfectly preserved circular ramparts.
- Sainte-Eulalie-d'Olt — a maze of flower-filled lanes, Renaissance houses and old mills along the Lot.
To the west and south-west
- Belcastel — perhaps the most romantic: a restored château, an old stone bridge and stepped houses mirrored in the Aveyron river.
- Sauveterre-de-Rouergue — a 13th-century royal bastide built around a superb central square lined with arcades (the "couverts").
- Najac — a spectacular street-village stretched along a ridge and crowned by a royal fortress watching over the Aveyron gorges.
The gems of South Aveyron
- Brousse-le-Château — a feudal castle clinging to the confluence of the Alrance and the Tarn, in a gorge setting.
- Peyre — a cliff-dwelling village whose houses cling to the rock, facing the immense Millau viaduct.
- La Couvertoirade — a Templar and Hospitaller town entirely enclosed by ramparts, set on the Larzac plateau.
