Hikes around Conques:
our 5 favourites

Forest and valley around Conques-en-Rouergue, Aveyron

The trails around Conques are among the most beautiful I've ever walked. Deep gorges, centuries-old oak groves, vertiginous views over the Dourdou valley, schist villages sleeping in the garrigue — each loop has its surprises. And best of all: most start directly from the property or from the village, without needing to get back in the car.

Here are my five favourites, for all levels and all seasons.

1. The Dourdou trail — the introductory walk

This is the quintessential walk around Lalalandes. Starting from the property, you descend towards the river via a forest path, then follow the Dourdou for several kilometres towards Grand Vabre. Clear water, ruined old mills, dense vegetation — total immersion in Aveyronnais nature for minimal effort.

  • Starting point: directly from the cottage
  • Distance: 5 to 10 km (out-and-back or loop)
  • Ascent: gentle
  • Duration: 1h30 to 3h
  • Level: easy — ideal for families

2. The GR 65 — in the footsteps of St James pilgrims

The GR 65, the St James's Way to Compostela, has passed through Conques for centuries. Walking a few kilometres of this ancient route is to walk in the tracks of millions of pilgrims from around the world. The section between Conques and Decazeville (or towards Estaing) is particularly beautiful: views over the valley, crossing of abandoned hamlets, sunken lanes between hedgerows.

  • Starting point: village of Conques (5 min from the cottage)
  • Distance: flexible (3 km or 20 km as you wish)
  • Ascent: moderate to demanding depending on the section
  • Duration: 1h to a full day
  • Level: easy to moderate

3. The La Vinzelle circuit — the viewpoints

This 8 km loop from Conques is the one I recommend to everyone who wants to see the region from above. The path climbs to the ridges overlooking the valley, crosses the hamlet of La Vinzelle, and offers 180° panoramas over the wooded heights of the Dourdou and Conques abbey below. The sunset seen from the ridge is memorable.

  • Starting point: village of Conques
  • Distance: 8 km loop
  • Ascent: 350 m
  • Duration: 2h30 to 3h
  • Level: moderate

4. The Dourdouze gorges — the wild trail

The Dourdouze is a tributary of the Dourdou that flows through gorges even more enclosed and less frequented than its neighbour. The trail that follows it crosses areas of ancient forest where centuries-old chestnut trees grow alongside giant ferns. You feel alone in the world — and you often are. Best in spring, when the river is high and wild flowers burst along the banks.

  • Starting point: hamlet of Noailhac (10 min by car from the cottage)
  • Distance: 6 km loop
  • Ascent: 200 m
  • Duration: 2h
  • Level: moderate — sometimes slippery terrain

5. The Rouergue ridge crossing — for serious walkers

For those wanting a real full day's hiking, the ridge crossing between Conques and Noailhac (or as far as Grand Vabre) offers complete immersion in Rouergue landscapes. You alternate between oak forests, heather moorland, and schist villages where time seems to have stopped. The return can be done by hitchhiking or taxi if your legs give out.

  • Starting point: village of Conques
  • Distance: 18 to 22 km depending on the route
  • Ascent: 700 m total
  • Duration: 5 to 7h
  • Level: difficult — good boots and supplies essential
